the short version: notei's editor needs a free account (the education edition at app.notei.co/edu doesn't), but the scores you make still stay in your browser until you choose a feature that needs the cloud. we only collect what we need to run notei, we don't sell your data, and we log your public compose and arrange requests to improve our models and to diagnose faults unless you turn that off — linked to your account when you are signed in; education-edition work is never used for training.
this depends on how you use notei. we collect:

the promise: the assistant only reads the score you currently have open — nothing else.
when you use the ai assistant, we send the text of your request and your currently-open score to our ai model providers so they can answer or make the edit. the assistant does not see your other scores, your files, or anything outside the score you're working on. music-generation features send note data, not audio.
under our providers' terms, they process your request only to return a result and do not use your content to train their models. notei logs your public compose and arrange requests to improve its own models unless you turn that off, and never uses education-edition work for training.
audio you hum or record is used only to produce notation — not to identify you or build a voiceprint. where a transcription feature runs entirely in your browser, that audio never leaves your device.

we share data only with the service providers that help us run notei — hosting and infrastructure, our ai model providers, our email provider, and our payment processor — and each only for the job it does for us. we may also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect notei and its users. we don't use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking.
in plain english: we use youtube's api to post our own marketing clips to our own youtube channel. it never touches your account or your data.
notei uses youtube api services to publish the short educational videos you may have seen on @trynotei. that is the whole of it. we do not read, store, embed or analyse anyone else's youtube content, we do not ask you to connect a youtube account, and no notei user is ever prompted to authorise one. the only account our software is authorised against is the notei channel itself, by us.
because of that, we collect and store no youtube user data about you — there is nothing of yours held under this integration to request, correct or delete. if that ever changes, this section changes with it before the feature ships.
by using youtube api services, we are bound by the youtube terms of service, and google's handling of any data it receives is governed by the google privacy policy. if you have ever granted an application access to your google account, you can review and revoke it at any time at google's security settings page.
in plain english: we use posthog to understand how notei gets used. if you're in the eea, the uk, or switzerland, we ask before setting any analytics cookie.
posthog records which pages you view, which links and buttons you click, and which forms you submit — not the contents of your music. if you're in the eea, the uk, or switzerland you get a banner, and no analytics cookie is set until you answer it; visitors elsewhere are accepted by default. accepting sets two cookies: notei_consent, which remembers your answer for 180 days, and posthog's own analytics cookie. both are set on notei.co, so one answer covers this site and the app.
declining doesn't switch measurement off. if you decline, the only cookie we set is the notei_consent one that records your answer. posthog sets no cookie of its own, stores nothing in your browser, and records no session replay — but your visit is still counted, using a privacy-preserving identifier posthog works out on its own servers rather than one kept on your device. deleting the notei_consent cookie brings the banner back so you can change your answer.
session replay. if you accept, posthog records a replay of your session — a reconstruction of what each page looked like and how you moved through it. anything you type into a form field is masked before it leaves your browser. in the app, three things are replaced by a blank block and are never recorded: the notation canvas, the conductor view, and your conversation with the ai assistant. your music and your ai conversations don't appear in a replay. the rest of the interface — menus, toolbars, and which buttons you press — does.
scores in your browser stay until you clear them. cloud-saved scores and account data are kept while your account is active. when you delete a score or your account, we remove it — except for backups that age out on a normal schedule, and anything we must keep to meet legal or accounting obligations.

in plain english: notei is meant for people 13 and older.
notei is intended for people aged 13 and up, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. in the eu, the minimum age of digital consent is set by each country and ranges from 13 to 16 — where a higher age applies to you, that age governs. if you believe a child under 13 has given us personal data, email hello@notei.co and we'll delete it.
notei is a global web product, and our providers may process data in countries other than yours, including the united states. where the law requires it, we use appropriate safeguards for those transfers.
we may update this policy as notei grows. we'll change the "last updated" date above and, for material changes, give notice in the app or by email.
